Small-Scale Palm Oil Production in Ghana
The environmental impact of small-scale palm oil processing mills in Ghana has come under serious questioning, especially the disposal of wastewater generated from their operations. This chapter describes the small-scale palm oil production operations in Ghana to highlight the associated environmental problems arising from the disposal of wastewater and other waste by-products. The chapter ...

The corresponding process flow diagram is shown in Figure 5. 4.2 Environmental regulations for palm oil processing mills in Ghana 4.2.1 Environmental permitting Palm oil processing mills (small-, medium- and large-scale) are required under Regulation 1 of the Ghana Environmental Assessment Regulations, 1999 (LI 1652) to register with and obtain ...
There are several large oil-palm plantations in Ghana, the largest of which is owned by the Ghana Oil Palm Development Company (GOPDC) and is located in the immediate vicinity of the study area (see Fig. 2). However, Ghana is still heavily dependent on imports of foreign palm oil (Ofosu-Budu & Sarpong, 2013).
Mapping the Oil Palm Value Chain in Ghana
20% of the area under oil palm while smallholders represent 80% of the area under oil palm. (iv) Small-scale producers produce approximately 60% to 80% of Ghana’s oil palm8. Oil extraction rate in large factories is around 19% whereas the oil extraction rate of artisanal processing is around 9-12%9.
As noted by Makafui, though Ghana’s palm oil production is said to have increased over the decades, the country is a net importer of palm oil. In 2021, the value of palm oil imported by Ghana was $289million as against an export value of $78.1million. This calls for urgent attention to address the challenges in the sector.
- How much palm oil does Ghana produce?
- In 2009, Ghana produced about 2,103,600 metric tons (MT) of oil palm fruit bunches and 130,000 MT of palm oil . Small-scale processors produce about 60% of the country's palm oil .
- Can small-scale oil palm processors produce good quality crude oil?
- When supported through training and provision of efficient processing equipment the small-scale oil palm processors can produce good quality crude palm oil to meet the demand of the local industry. However, the government's policy has been to support smallholder outgrower schemes attached to large and medium scale processing mills.
- Why is palm oil a problem in Ghana?
- A large percentage of the palm oil produced by small-scale processors cannot be utilized by the larger scale industries in Ghana or abroad because of its poor quality. There is an urgent need to explore the causes and to identify ways to address the situation.
- Why is crude palm oil not a quality standard?
- The crude palm oil (CPO) produced by these processors does not meet the quality standard for industrial utilization because of its high content of free fatty acids. In order to meet the country's fats and oil requirements, which are estimated at 252,432 MT, the country imports large quantities of palm oil annually.
- How does socio-technical and institutional constraints affect palm oil processing?
- The combined effects of the identified socio-technical and institutional constraints located at both the processor and above-processor levels impact the processors, and hence palm oil quality, and hinder their access to remunerative markets all year round. 5.5. Processing of oil palm fruits
- Does processing conditions affect yield and quality of palm oil?
- Effect of processing conditions on yield and quality of hydraulically expressed palm oil Extraction and physiochemical properties of low free fatty acid crude palm oil Evaluation of the quality of palm oil produced by different methods of processing Research Journal of Biological Sciences, 1 ( 2006), pp. 16 - 19
