  • How does a soybean oil extraction process work?
  • The extraction process uses hexane or other solvents to wash the soybean oil from the prepared soybean flakes. The design of the equipment varies so that Crown can optimize the amount of solvent and bed depth needed to efficiently wash the flakes, the contact time of the solvent and flakes, and the power and utilities needed to run the equipment.
  • How hexane is extracted from crushed soybean?
  • The solubility of hexane and oil is the principle for the solvent extraction to extract oil from crushed soybean, and the desolvenization is applied to recover free oil and soybean meal. Further degumming and refining processes are needed for both expelling and hexane extraction to remove phospholipids and other impurities. Fig. 1.
  • Does soybean oil contain metals?
  • Certain metals often produce deleterious effects when present in soybean oil. Trace quantities of copper, iron and manganese dramatically reduce the oxidative stability of edible oils. The presence of calcium and magnesium in crude oils reduces the efficiency of degumming and refining operations.
  • How is soybean oil extracted from soybean flakes?
  • Finally, mechanical rollers are used to make thin flakes and rupture the cells containing the soybean oil. The extraction process uses hexane or other solvents to wash the soybean oil from the prepared soybean flakes.
  • Is hexane extraction a problem in the soybean oil industry?
  • In industry, the mechanical pressing-expelling, and hexane extraction are two typically used processes. However, lower oil recovery from expelling, and safety and environmental issues (Li et al., 2004, Oliveira et al., 2013) resulted from hexane extraction are the main flaws in the soybean oil industry.
  • Do soybean oil extraction processes require desolvenization?
  • Electricity consumption for soybean oil extraction processes. These results also reflect that the expelling process has the lower energy efficiency and the solvent extraction needs more energy for post-handling indicating the requirement for desolvenization.
