  • Can petroleum derived n-hexane be used to extract oil from cottonseed?
  • Petroleum derived n-hexane is commercially used in solvent extraction plants due to its higher extraction efficiency in spite of the fact that it is graded as highly toxic and hazardous. The present study is based on the use of both a much safer and non toxic solvent ethanol and n-hexane for the extraction of oil from cottonseed.
  • Can hexane be used to extract oil from cottonseed?
  • Hexane has been used for decades to extract oil from cottonseed and is still the solvent of choice for the edible-oil industry. Due to increased regulations as a result of the 1990 Clean Air Act and… Commercial processing of cottonseed requires hexane to extract and recover edible oil. Gossypol and aflatoxin are not removed from extracted meals.
  • Does ethanol extract oil better than hexane?
  • The results indicate that at temperature of 45 o C and solvent to solid ratio of more than 10, ethanol has oil extraction efficiency comparable to hexane. The meal produced in the extraction process is found to have lower gossypol content when ethanol is used.
  • How hexane extraction is most efficient?
  • It can be concluded from this study that grain moisture content and solvent type had great influence in determining oil yield; and that hexane extraction was most efficient. Cotton crop is grown to meet the basic requirement of fabrics. After de-linting the cotton ball, seed is left which is a good source of oil approx.18% and protein approx.25%.
  • Can ethanol be used for cotton oil extraction?
  • The use of ethanol in comparison with n-hexane for cotton oil extraction was investigated by Saxena et al. using the Soxhlet extractor, testing at different proportions of oil/solvent, operating temperatures, cotton particle size and extraction time.
  • Can n-hexane be used in soap production of Nigerian CSO?
  • After Soxhlet extraction of Nigerian CSO by using n-hexane as solvent which gives 48% yield of oil and studying the characterization of extracted CSO, it was concluded CSO with good saponification, iodine, and acid value could be utilized in the soap production.
